The Koch-Chemie Detailing Bucket "Grit Guard" dirt screen is a grid insert that drops neatly into the Detailing Bucket and traps grit, sand and small stones at the bottom of the wash bucket, so they don't get stirred back up when you dunk your wash mitt — the key mechanism behind a scratch-free two-bucket wash.
The Grit Guard idea is simple and seriously effective: the screen lies flat on the bottom of the Detailing Bucket. When you dunk the wash mitt or sponge into the rinse bucket after a pass and rub it out on the grid, the dirt you've pulled off — sand, stones, brake dust — sinks through the grid openings to the bottom and stays there. The grid stops the water movement from stirring that dirt back up. So the wash mitt always goes into clean water — even once the bottom of the bucket is well covered. Without a Grit Guard, every dunk would kick the grit off the bottom and load it straight back into the sponge. The scratching happens exactly when those particles end up between the sponge and the paint on the next pass.
In the classic two-bucket method the Grit Guard mainly goes in the rinse bucket (bucket 2, clean water): you rub the wash mitt out on the grid after every panel, the dirt sinks through the grid and settles at the bottom. For maximum protection it's worth running a Grit Guard in the wash bucket too (bucket 1 with shampoo) — that keeps the shampoo water clean for longer as well. The Detailing Bucket Set bundles the bucket, Grit Guard and click-on lid as one complete kit. If you already own a Detailing Bucket and just want to add the screen, grab it on its own as a single component.
The dirt screen is made from tough, water-resistant plastic and is matched to the base diameter of the Koch-Chemie Detailing Bucket. It sits tight and won't tip when you rub the mitt against it. The grid openings are sized so even finer bits like brake dust can drop through. Cleaning: just rinse it out together with the bucket. The Grit Guard isn't tied to shampoo solutions — it works exactly the same in clean rinse water as it does in shampoo water.
Detailing1's tip from the shop: Push the Grit Guard right down into the bucket — it has to sit on the bottom, not float somewhere in the middle. When you rub the mitt out on the screen, you're mechanically working the dirt loose, and it drops through the grid. Some detailers also run the Grit Guard Washboard for this, which gives you a washboard-style surface and pulls even more dirt out of the sponge.
If you're asking whether a dirt screen is really necessary, you've probably never run them side by side. Wash by hand without a Grit Guard and a normal bucket is already carrying visible grit in the water by the second or third panel — the particles kicked up off the bottom are now in your wash mitt and riding onto the next panel. If you keep spotting wash scratches and swirl marks on the car, you tend to blame the wash tool — but more often it's the missing Grit Guard. The screen costs little and protects every wash. Compared with other dirt-separation setups like the Grit Guard Washboard, the screen is the more compact, simpler option — for keen detailers doing several cars a week, running both together pays off.
Anyone who washes their cars by hand and wants to keep wash scratches out. The screen really earns its keep on dark paint, where swirl marks stand out most — black, dark blue, anthracite. For pros washing several cars a day, a Grit Guard is non-negotiable. As a cheap single component, it's the fastest upgrade for any existing bucket that's compatible with the Koch-Chemie Detailing Bucket 20L.
The Grit Guard dirt screen is a grid insert for wash buckets that traps grit at the bottom of the bucket. When you rub the wash mitt out on the screen, sand and stones sink through the grid and the grid structure stops them being stirred back up. That keeps the wash water clean for longer and the mitt doesn't pick the grit back up.
Lay the Grit Guard on the bottom of the wash bucket — it has to sit flat all the way down. After every pass, rub the mitt or sponge out on the grid in the rinse bucket so the dirt sinks through. Then wet the mitt again in the wash water (bucket 1) and carry on. Rinse the grid out with the bucket after every wash.
Ideally in both buckets. The rinse bucket comes first, because that's where most of the dirt settles. In the wash bucket the Grit Guard stops particles on the bottom getting back into the shampoo water. If you've only got one screen, put it in the rinse bucket.
The Koch-Chemie Grit Guard is designed specifically for the Koch-Chemie Detailing Bucket 20L and fits it perfectly. For other buckets it comes down to the base diameter — it has to be compatible. If in doubt, check the inside diameter of your bucket before you buy.
If you keep finding wash scratches and swirl marks even though you wash with a good mitt, the missing Grit Guard is often the reason. The screen reliably stops grit being stirred back up in the bucket — that's physics, not marketing. On dark paint especially, the difference shows after a few washes.
