What is GYEON Q²M Iron? A pH-neutral iron remover with a gel formula and color indicator that chemically binds and visualizes iron particles on paint, wheels, and glass – without mechanical abrasion. Not suitable for tar, resin, or organic contaminants.

GYEON Q²M Iron (Q2M Iron) is a reactive iron remover from GYEON that works via thioglycolic acid derivatives: The active ingredient binds iron(III) compounds on the surface and forms a water-soluble complex that can be completely removed by rinsing. The color change from colorless to violet shows in real-time where iron contamination is located and how severe it is. The gel adheres vertically to the paint and does not run off – at pH 6, it does not attack clear coat, seals, or convertible tops.

• Color indicator makes contamination visible. The violet color change shows you exactly where iron particles are located – even where the paint appears visually clean. On an average vehicle driven for 3 months in road traffic, Q²M Iron reacts over a wide area. This is not a defect, but the normal state: brake dust, rail abrasion, and industrial emissions leave microscopic iron particles on every vehicle.
• pH 6 and gel formula for extended dwell time. Most iron removers are thin-bodied and run off vertical surfaces immediately. Q²M Iron remains as a gel on the surface, thus extending the effective dwell time. The nearly neutral pH of 6 makes the product safe for clear coats, ceramic coatings, all types of rims, and glass – with a correct maximum dwell time of 2 minutes.
• Mandatory step before polishing and coating. Iron particles are in the clear coat, not on the clear coat. Polishing only displaces them, but does not remove them. Q²M Iron chemically dissolves the particles from the paint surface before you polish or apply a coating. Without this step, you seal the contamination under the coating – with the risk of long-term damage to the clear coat.

Practical Tip from Detailing1: GYEON specifies a maximum dwell time of 2 minutes – significantly shorter than many competitors. Stick to this. The active ingredient reaches its saturation limit after 2 minutes: longer dwell time does not provide additional cleaning performance, but increases the risk of residues on the surface. For heavy contamination, a second pass is always more effective than an extended dwell time on the first. Always apply to washed, wet paint – never to dry or hot surfaces, never in direct sunlight.

Spray on. 2 Minutes. Rinse off.

GYEON Q²M Iron is sprayed onto the wet paint after pre-washing and reacts visibly with the iron particles on the surface within 30-60 seconds. You need about 150 ml per vehicle for moderate contamination – that's three to four complete vehicle cleanings from the 500 ml bottle.

Work from top to bottom: roof, hood, side panels, then bumpers and sills. The lower areas are more contaminated because they are directly exposed to brake dust from the front axle. When the color change to violet begins, the reaction has started. After a maximum of 2 minutes, rinse off with a strong jet of water – do not wait longer.

For wheel arches and hard-to-reach areas on the sills, you can spread the product with a soft brush or applicator. Do not scrub – just spread. The chemical reaction does the work. For new cars delivered by rail, expect two passes: iron contamination from rail abrasion is significantly higher than from normal road traffic.

One detail that GYEON does not explicitly communicate: Q²M Iron must not be diluted with water. The reason is simple – tap water contains trace amounts of iron, and the active ingredient would react immediately with these traces instead of working on the paint surface. This is also why it is recommended to work on wet paint: the water on the paint is already applied and does not dilute the product, but helps to distribute it evenly.

Iron rust dissolves Q²M Iron. Tar does not.

Q²M Iron reacts exclusively with iron compounds – brake dust, rail abrasion, industrial emissions. Organic contaminants such as tar, tree sap, insect residues, or bird droppings do not show a color change and are not dissolved. This is not a defect, but chemistry: thioglycolic acid binds iron, not carbon.

The color change is more than a visual effect – it is a diagnostic tool. Strong violet discoloration means high iron contamination. If an area remains colorless, there is no iron rust there, but possibly tar or organic dirt. This information helps you to choose the next cleaning step specifically: where Q²M Iron does not react, a tar remover based on solvents is needed.

For complete chemical decontamination, you therefore need two products: Q²M Iron for inorganic contamination (iron) and tar remover for organic (tar, resin, adhesive residues). The order is secondary – both products work on different types of contamination and do not affect each other. This is followed by mechanical decontamination with cleaning clay for anything that has not been chemically dissolved.

Where Q²M Iron reaches its limits: For vehicles that have been in road traffic for longer than 6 months without decontamination, the iron particles have penetrated so deeply into the clear coat that even two passes will not dissolve everything. In this case, subsequent polishing helps to mechanically remove the remaining inclusions.

Q²M Iron removes the free and surface-near particles – the deeply embedded ones are a job for the polishing machine. Even against burnt-on brake dust on rims that has eaten in for months, Q²M Iron, designed for the overall paint, is not the first choice – for this, there is the more concentrated Iron WheelCleaner.

Q²M Iron belongs in every detailing workflow between washing and polishing – whether for full detailing in the workshop or for thorough garage care on the weekend. The complete decontamination sequence: Wash, chemical decontamination (Iron + Tar), mechanical decontamination (clay), then polishing and coating. Those who skip this step polish iron particles into the clear coat instead of removing them.

The reason is physical: iron particles are harder than clear coat. When you drive a polishing machine over contaminated paint, the polishing pad presses the particles deeper into the material instead of abrading them. The result initially looks good because the polish smoothes the paint around the particles. But under the new surface, the iron inclusions remain – and continue to oxidize there for weeks. Q²M Iron before polishing is therefore not a recommendation, but damage prevention.

Q²M Iron is also useful for regular care between detailing sessions: applied to washed paint every 2–3 months, it prevents the accumulation of iron particles and keeps the paint surface decontaminated. This is particularly important for vehicles with ceramic paint protection: the coating layer protects the clear coat, but iron particles also settle on the sealant and can attack it in the long term.

After the Iron treatment, it is recommended to refresh the sealant – either wet with a wet sealant or dry with a spray coating. This is the complete care workflow in under 20 minutes: wash, Iron, rinse, seal. A typical sulfur smell during application is normal and indicates the active reaction of the active ingredient with the iron oxides – it dissipates completely after rinsing.

The three container sizes cover different application scenarios: 500 ml for 3–4 vehicles for regular washing, 1 liter as the standard size for the ambitious home user, 4 liters for detailers and workshops with several vehicles per week.

At approx. €6 per application (500 ml bottle, approx. 150 ml per vehicle), Q²M Iron is not a luxury product, but standard equipment for anyone who wants to preserve their paint long-term. If you want to lower the price per liter, opt for the 4-liter container size: €102 for 4,000 ml results in €25.50 per liter compared to €36 for the 500 ml bottle. For getting started with decontamination, the 500 ml bottle is the right test – three applications are enough to see and feel the difference on the paint.

Application of GYEON Q²M Iron Iron Remover

From pre-wash to decontaminated surface

First, wash the vehicle with car shampoo and rinse it thoroughly. The paint should be wet, but free of coarse dirt. Spray Q²M Iron evenly onto the surface – from top to bottom, so that runoff marks do not dry. You will need approximately 150 ml for an entire vehicle with normal contamination.

Within 30–60 seconds, the color change begins: Purple discoloration indicates a reaction with iron particles. The maximum dwell time is 2 minutes. A common mistake: Letting it sit longer does not increase effectiveness, because the active ingredient is saturated after 2 minutes. For heavy contamination, it is better to rinse completely and do a second pass.

After rinsing, the professional workflow includes mechanical decontamination with Q²M ClayLube and detailing clay. For regular maintenance every 2–3 months, Q²M Iron alone is sufficient, followed by a sealant refresh.

Notes: Never apply to hot surfaces – allow at least 15 minutes to cool down after driving. Do not use in direct sunlight, as the product will otherwise dry and leave residues. Q²M Iron must not be diluted with water, as the active ingredient already reacts to traces of iron in tap water. Wear gloves – the active ingredient can cause allergic reactions in sensitive skin (H317). Store frost-free, shelf life 24 months after opening.
